A quiet return (and an honest update)

Hi Reader,

If I’m honest… I didn’t plan to be gone this long.

But somewhere between showing up for everything and trying to keep pace,

I realized I hadn’t left much room to just be.

So I paused.

Not because I had nothing to say

...but because I needed to rest and recharge.

Let's get into it. But first...

Affirmation

Say it with me:

I am allowed to step away without losing who I am becoming.

Because not every pause is a setback.

Some pauses are where your life starts making sense again.

Story Time

For the past few months, life has been… full.

Full in the kind of way that looks really good on paper ⬇️

✅ A promotion at work
✅ Redoing MBA classes so I could finally walk.
✅ Preparing to return home to Barbados.

Yet the kind of full that is also taxing on your body because so much is happening at once.

That’s the season I found myself in.

All good things.
All aligned things.

And still… it required a different kind of energy.

Not soft, flowing energy. But focused, “get it done” energy.

A season where consistency looked like discipline, not ease.

And maybe you’ve had seasons like that too...
AKA
where life asks more of you, and you rise to the occasion.

But eventually, something shifts.

I reached a point where I couldn’t sustain the rigorous schedule.

So I finished what needed to be finished, and chose to rest.

Because this wasn’t burnout.
It was a return to pouring into myself.

And the best way I can describe it is via this farming analogy.

Farmers know that when land is used over and over again, you can’t keep planting the same thing every season.

Because eventually, the soil gets depleted.

So you rotate what you plant.

Not because the land is failing.
But because it needs something different to stay healthy.

Key Takeaway: Sometimes, the shift is what sustains you.

Reflection

That’s what this season revealed.

Not every season is meant for output.

Not every season is meant for visibility.

And for so many of us (especially when we’re balancing work, life, creativity, and responsibility)
...it’s easy to believe we always have to be “on” to stay aligned.

But that’s not sustainable.

Sometimes alignment looks like consistency.
And sometimes it looks like stepping back before you run yourself into the ground.

Sometimes it looks like building.
And sometimes it looks like restoring what’s been poured out.

Neither one is better.
Both are necessary.

So if things have felt off lately…
or heavier than usual…

It might not mean you’re doing something wrong.

You might just be in a different season.

Something to Try:

Instead of asking, “How do I keep going?”

Ask yourself:
What kind of season am I actually in right now?

Is this a season to plant?
Or a season to restore?

And more importantly, have I been trying to force one when I really need the other?

Next week, I’ll share what this season taught me about rhythm, and why the way we’ve been taught to “stay consistent” doesn’t always fit real life.

See you *next* Tuesday,

Tamara Sykes

Hi Reader, Have you ever walked into a room thinking... "I hope they see that I belong here." Maybe it's a new job.A meeting.A speaking opportunity.A networking event. And without realizing it, you spend more energy trying to prove yourself than simply showing up. Let's talk about it. But first... Affirmation Say it with me: I do not have to prove I belong. I belong because I showed up prepared and as myself. Because the room doesn't need another version of someone else. It needs the version...

Hi Reader, You know what’s interesting about opportunities you really want? They can make you forget yourself a little. Suddenly, you start thinking:How can I sound more impressive?More polished?More professional? And before you know it…you’re no longer leading with your actual strengths. Let's talk about it. But first... Affirmation Say it with me: I do not have to overcomplicate myself or be perfect to be credible. Because simple and clear will always land better than forced and perfect....

Hi Reader, I had the same conversation twice recently. Once in a message…and again with a college grad I spoke to last week. Different people.Different stages of life. But the same underlying question: “What does it actually mean to build a personal brand?” Let's talk about it. But first... Affirmation Say it with me: I don’t have to show up like everyone else to build a personal brand. Because there isn’t one way to show up...and there never was. Story Time In both conversations, I noticed...
